Pure Zari vs Tested Zari — The Honest Guide
Zari is the metallic thread that creates the gold-and-silver embellishment in Kanchipuram sarees. Not all zari is equal, and the difference matters — for appearance, longevity, and value.
What Zari Actually Is
Pure zari: A fine silver wire drawn to hair-like thinness, then electroplated with 24-carat gold, then wrapped around a core of natural silk thread. Premium zari can contain up to 0.5 grams of silver and 0.2 milligrams of gold per metre of thread. It carries intrinsic metal value.
Tested zari: Silver-coated copper or synthetic wire — lighter, cheaper, visually similar when new. It does not contain the metal content of pure zari.
Imitation / plastic zari: Metallised plastic film. Looks bright initially; no metal content whatsoever.
Why Zari Darkens Over Time — and Why That Is a Good Sign
The darkening or “tarnishing” of pure zari is one of the most misunderstood qualities in handloom silk. Customers often treat it as a flaw. It is not.
Pure zari darkens because it is real silver. When silver (Ag) is exposed to trace sulfur compounds in air — particularly hydrogen sulfide — it forms silver sulfide (Ag₂S), which is dark in colour. The reaction is accelerated by humidity, air pollution, and even the natural acidity of skin.
Tested zari and plastic zari remain bright. Why? Because they contain no silver to react. In traditional South Indian households, aged zari — with its warm, muted antique sheen — is often considered more beautiful and more valuable than new zari. Many NRI customers specifically request sarees with “antique” zari for precisely this reason.
How to Choose
| Pure Zari | Tested Zari | |
|---|---|---|
| Metal content | Silver + 24k gold | Silver-coated copper |
| Long-term appearance | Develops antique patina | May dull unevenly |
| Value over time | Retains intrinsic metal value | Depreciates |
| Best for | Heirloom pieces, weddings | Daily wear, gifting |
